The Peppermint Rainbow - Will You be Staying After Sunday - `69

hey all :

here is another great sunshine pop lp from the 60`s. Lemon Piper producer Paul Leka produced this one as well as even wrote a few trax. includes a great cover of green tamborine ..
lovely vocals & melodies on this one , a must for any sunshine pop / psych pop fan.

REVIEW :

"What happens when you take elements from two of Spanky & Our Gang's hits -- "Sunday Morning" and "Sunday Will Never Be the Same" -- create a sequel, and let veteran producer Paul Leka oversee the concept? You get a brilliant Top 35 hit from April of 1969, "Will You Be Staying After Sunday," by this little-known group out of Baltimore, the Peppermint Rainbow. Sisters Pat Lamdin and Bonnie Lamdin, singing in unison, sound like Elaine "Spanky" McFarlane, and the song has the same soaring melodic style that made "Sunday Will Never Be the Same" so precious two years prior to this. Leka would hit again in November of 1969 with Steam's "Na Na, Hey Hey, Kiss Him Goodbye," and has an impressive résumé ranging from Gloria Gaynor to songwriter Tim Moore's Behind the Eyes, and he hits a 90 percent with this album, which has a number of potential hits, from "Walking in Different Circles" to "I Found out I Was a Woman." The Lamdin sisters have a wonderful style, dipping into a Mamas & the Papas mode for "And I'll Be There" (Spanky McFarlane, after all, replaced Mama Cass in a latter-day Mamas & the Papas). There are more references to "Sunday" here, as well as on "If We Can Make It to Monday," a sequel to "Will You Be Staying After Sunday," written by the same songwriters. Paul Leka composed "Green Tambourine" for the Lemon Pipers, and it appears here as well, though in not as refined a form as the 1967 hit, this version a bit more folky. "Run Like the Devil" is the one turkey on here, one of the guys in the band not being able to hold his own on vocals, but with material by Barry Manilow/American Breed songwriter Scott English and superb production by Leka, the Peppermint Rainbow deliver a truly smart and entertaining pop album." -- AMG

Another great group!

Although they also sound like the group "Original Caste" besides "Spanky & our Gang".

Verrrrrrrry niiiiiice!

Any chance you have the Pleasure Fair album on UNI? I had TWO copies of this and offloaded them ages ago; of course I regret it now ... never seen it anywhere since ... lovely album w/Robb Royer pre-Bread ...

Hey aka - The Pleasure Fair album really is a lost "classic" of soft pop. There's no psych element (none that I can remember), but it's a lovely-sounding album with great harmonies, and a cover of "Barefoot In The Park". I'm sure you'd love it. I'm glad this kind of music is being appreciated after so long. I always felt guilty about liking Spanky And Our Gang more than the Thirteenth Floor Elevators, but I can't help it - I do!

ha , dont feel guilty , me too !
much more into the sunnier side of psych. the more blues based , fuzz stuff is great & all , but i really dig the more embellished , dare i say "overproduced" pop than anything : spin on & i`ll keep em coming !

WOW!!!! Another long lost jewel of the crow at last posted for our pleasure!!! I didn´t heard before this combo, only had some info, but their (sole?) album is a good example of sunny pop!! I´m listening to it while Í write my comment and I think this is an excellent one!!!
Once again,a million thanks for making our lives musically happier!!
Ah!! If you don´t know these bands and you cand find their (unique) albums,I recommend to search for them, for a good listening, there are two little masterpieces:
-THE PEPPERMINT TROLLEY: Same (Kapp records,1967??)USA
- JUPITER SUNSET: Same (Emi Pathe,1970) France
Best wishes

Yeah, I have The Peppermint Trolley Co. album on vinyl. Fabulous, and very underrrated. It's far better than The Troll's album, for example, and kind of similar.

The trolls album???

You mean trolls - animated music???

Oh wait...you mean short for trolley right?

"Animated Music" - yep, that's the one. Had that, dumped it, never regretted it. Horrible song about a shoe-maker or something. PTC album similar vein, less saccharine, more consistent.

Thanks so much for this one. And I'm glad to see there are other closet PR fans out there. I grew up listening to the Animals, Beatles, Stones, Lee Michaels, Airplane, Grand Funk, Seatrain, Blue Cheer and many others. Always felt I had to hide the fact that I liked this one...

Hi,
Is this a bubble gum? So what?I do like bubble gums, and more often than not I like to chew in the small hidden drop of surprise that lingers innocently in the center.

So many "serious" reviewers say that bubble gum and the sugar in it damages health.

Why don't you give us an endless break, you wizards,of the ultimate musical knowledge, and let us have some fun, "Kites are fun , and "stay after Sunday",even "run like devils" and catch our own him or her?

Clean teeth, smiling, make them, laughing faces, and harmonious voices are a lot better than snow and winter winds.

Let the sunshine in.
